Session Border Controllers (SBCs) provide security, interoperability, routing and other functions in a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) network.
An enterprise may need a SBC to manage dial plans and policies across multiple PBX systems (IP and TDM), and other Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or SIP based applications like Lync (also known as Skype for Business). Besides working as a media gateway, SBC also provides security from attacks like DoS and DDos, as well as toll fraud and theft of service.
As a solution for Microsoft Lync / Skype for Business, a SBC serves an enhanced gateway to support connectivity and conversion between VoIP and Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) protocols and signaling. In addition, it secures SIP connectivity for voice and video. At the same time, it also brings capabilities of embedded functionality of Survivable Branch Appliance (SBA) and Resilient Branch Appliance (RBA), in the event of a WAN failure.
